By Richard Pulliam Shocked, amazed
and totally surprised, are just a few words that
describe how Mrs. Ruth Jones Hairston said she felt
after entering the room for an unveiling ceremony of
a special painting at Martin Luther King Leadership
Academy, December 19, 2007.
Hairston was unaware that she had just walked into
an honorary presentation; neither did she expect to
be the honoree.
Renown artist, Paul Collins presented to her one of
his original paintings to be housed in the school’s
media center.

African
Elders Launch New Rights Campaign |
|
The Grand Rapids Times

Special
to the NNPA from GIN
(GIN) – A new campaign to combat human rights abuses
worldwide was launched this month by a group of African
elders.
The campaign was announced in Cape Town this week, timed to
commemorate International Human Rights Day.
“The Elders,” a group of global leaders, were convened by
Nelson Mandela and his wife Graca Machel in July 1997 to
address global challenges.
They include Archbishop Desmond Tutu, rights campaigner
Machel, Mandela, former UN chief Kofi Annan, among others.
‘’As Elders, it is our responsibility to listen to and
amplify people’s voices. The biggest enemy of human rights
is silence,’’ said Graca Machel.
The campaign, called ‘’Every human has rights’’, aims to
collect at least a billion signatures worldwide in support
of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Machel called
for specific attention to the rights of women and children:
‘’We would like to feel the pulse of the world - from the
most remote areas of our globe, from those who believe they
are forgotten - to come forward and be part of this large
movement of people who speak out to protect their rights, to
advance their rights, and to speak out against abuses.’’ |

Study: Rogue Cops Tolerated In Black, Latino Neighborhoods |
|
The Grand Rapids Times
December 21, 2007
By Ashahed M. Muhammad
Special to the NNPA from the Final Call
Chicago (NNPA) - While residents in Black and Latino neighborhoods
may have already accepted this as a reality, a new report documents
a troubling tendency by law enforcement agencies to ignore cases of
officers accused of brutality and corruption.
A strict code of silence and tangled bureaucracy shields officers
from scrutiny, said researchers.
A team led by Professor Craig Futterman of the University of Chicago
Law School focused on the Chicago Police Department (CPD) as a case
study of systemic controls and disciplinary oversight of officers
accused of misconduct.

Whatever Happened To The Dream? |
The Grand Rapids Times
December 21, 2007
Commentary by Donald Williams, Sr.
The dream of social, political and economic equality is still alive.
The need is greater than ever for African Americans, and our
determination continues to be put to the challenge.
The Youth Center Project of the Concerned Citizens Council is still
progressing. We are perplexed at this community’s response to the
apparent need, but we are not going to drop the ball on another
generation of children, most of whom are minority children of
promise.

White Male Pathology Needs Investigation |
The Grand Rapids Times
12-21-2007Once again young White males, who are junior members of
the most powerful, pampered and protected special interest group in
this country, have embarked on a spree of mass killings.
They join a long list of White male mass killers and sexual predator
killers, who have emerged in the U.S. during the past 50 years.
Yet, when politicians, academicians, pundits and other propagandists
write about or discuss the actions of their fellow White males, the
focus is on the individual killers.
There is very little commentary about the pathology of White males
as a group.
