Strategizing For Black Votes, Clinton Says She’s
Not Intimidated, Will Stand On Civil Rights Record |
The Grand Rapids Times
1-11-2008
By Hazel Trice Edney
NNPA Editor-in-Chief
Washington (NNPA) – Despite what appears to be a growing momentum
for Sen. Barack Obama, who could become the nation’s first Black
president, Sen. Hillary Clinton told the Black Press of America this
week that she will stand on her civil rights record as she faces
what is expected to be the largest Black voter turnout in recent
history for the South Carolina primary on Jan. 26 and Super Tuesday,
Feb. 5.“I do not see myself as being disadvantaged. I have a very
long record of working with and producing results for
African-Americans, for poor people, for hard-working people, for
kids. And I’ll put that record up against anyone. And if you want to
know what kind of changes any of us will make, look at what we’ve
already done. That’s the best predictor of what we will do in the
future,” says Clinton in a telephone interview with the NNPA News
Service the day after she lost Iowa’s Democratic Primary to Obama
and former Sen. John Edwards.

Yes, Michigan Democrats
May Vote On Tuesday, January 15th, And You Should |
|
The Grand Rapids Times
1-11-2008
By Gertrude G. Croom
“I
want the facts, and nothing but the simple facts”. This is the
statement I have been hearing from those citizens asking about the
2008 presidential nomination and election. Michigan voters who
consider themselves Democrats are even more confused than the
country as a whole. Here is the simple fact.
If you are a Senator Hillary Clinton supporter, you may vote for
her, her name does appear on Michigan’s Democratic party ballot.
There are some lesser known Democrats who are also listed, like
Dennis Kucinich, and the same applies. But, for those of you looking
for Barack Obama’s name , it is not there. However, your vote for
“NON COMMITtAL” would allow the delegates from Michigan to the
national Democratic convention in August to perhaps support him.
This could be crucial because if Senator Clinton , nor anyone does
not get the required number, 2,025 delegate votes out of a total
4,049 as they go from state to state, then the delegates attending
the conv ention would have the opportunity to select the candidate
from the floor. This is where those noncommittal votes could make the
difference in a tight floor vote.

Great Debaters Bears Strong Message |
The Grand Rapids Times
1-4-2008
Blackonomic$
Commentary by James Clingman
Having seen one of the best movies I have ever seen, namely, ‘’The
Great Debaters’’, and having read a piece in the Wall Street Journal
by Abigail and Stephan Thernstrom, titled, ‘’Separation Anxiety’’, I
thought of the ironies of so-called HBCU’s and the issues they face
today.
I thought about the students these schools have graduated and the
professionals they have produced.
I thought about the 13th 14th and 15th Amendments to the
Constitution and how they were expressly written for Black people
but have, over the years, evolved into laws that some believe, and
others profess, to have been written for “minorities.”

Larry 'Doc' Blue Dies |
The Grand Rapids Times
1-4-2008
By Richard Pulliam
Larry
“Doc” Blue’s older sister remembers him as a dreamer.
“He was blessed to be able to see many of his dreams come true,”
said his older sister.
One of his dreams was to own a business. He was a businessman. For a
number of years, “Doc Blue” operated a bus transportation service
for chartered trips and for regular runs to casinos.
He desired to tell the truth as a journalist. He did more recently
as a regular contributor to The Grand Rapids Times, and some years
ago, as an editor and writer for an in-house publication.

Will America Choose Black Skin Over Black Wingtips? |
The Grand Rapids Times
1-4-2008
Point Blank
Commentary by Chris StevensonA black man is currently running for
president and leading in some polls in Iowa just as the caucus is
underway? Yeah, right. Next you’ll be telling me that Oprah Winfrey
is endorsing him.
In all honesty, Hillary Clinton is supposed to be a done deal by
now; and almost a year after she formed that exploratory committee
January 20, 2007, it seems that she may be done for.
Confiscating Senator Barack Obama’s grade school essays and having
former NBA star and current mega-business mogul Magic Johnson won’t
be enough to tip the scales for her in what could be the most
pivotal part of the campaign season.
