Joanne Riley has more than thirty - seven years of experience as a hair stylist. She recently introduced her new hair care product line. In this interview with the Grand Rapids Times, she talks about how she started in her career as a stylist, her journey to owning her own salon and more.

GRT: What has your journey in the hair care industry been like?

Riley: My Mother, Irene Taylor, Was The Owner Of Several Salons In The Grand Rapids A Reai Grew Up In A Hair Salon And Started Doing Hair When I Was Seventeen. I Was A Single Parent. I've Worked At Multiple Salons And I Was Blessed To Have My Own At 640 Eastern Street, Which I Owned For Seven Years. It Shut Down Due To The Building Being Sold.

I Am Currently At Reflections, Located At 2650 E Beltline Ave, In Suite 13. I Thank God For All Of The Places That I Have Worked At Over The Years And I Have Only Positive Things To Say About The Owners.

At Reflections, I thank God that the owner Jerry White allows me to be myself more than ever and has given me the opportunity to just soar with my creativity. I am an interior designer as well as a hair stylist so creativity is apart of who I am. Being around such a great man of God has allowed me to flourish while staying in my own lane, leading up to my hair care product line.

GRT: What are your thoughts on wigs and hair weaves?

Riley: I am so passionate about hair and the hair care industry that I that ten years ago or so when hair weaves became so prevalent, I opted to stay away based on the fact that because I was brought up in the hair care industry, I watched how it didn't allow us to keep the integrity of our hair.

Most women use wigs and weave to cover up their damaged hair. but you cannot achieve healthy hair when you don't take care of your own. So what's the point of protecting damaged hair?

No disrespect to any salons, beauticians or individuals; but through my own studies, I have watched how it messed our hair up.

If you think about wigs and weaves, you should think about the performing theatre, performing arts, and Hollywood because that it where wigs and weaves are spun off of.

Wigs and weaves were never designed to be something that you kept up with for multiple weeks or months. That is how you lose the integrity of your hair. It creates breakage and receding hairlines.

There are so many people who are asking me is this Alopecia and I have to tell them no its not, it is the tension from the braids as well as our hair not being able to get the oxygen that it needs in our pores.

GRT: Can you tell me about your hair care products and their purpose?

Riley: I chose to design grease as well as an oil sheen based on the fact that this is the perfect time as seasons change. Our skin is our biggest organ. We get a lot of brittle, dry skin especially the scalp. We have to learn to moisturize ourselves as well as our scalp.

What my product does is put the nutrients back into the scalp as well as the hair. That is what we need. My oil sheen product works for any texture of hair. You can mist it on if you have you're your hair at night or if you have dreadlocks, it moisturizes the hair as well.

Both products allow users to maintain the integrity of their hair.

Whether you like your hair bouncy or just soft, my products allow you to have either one. Plus, they are very affordable. The grease is only $10.95 and the oil sheen is only $12.95.
