Ovell Barbee Adds Meaning To Giving Back

Ovell R. Barbee says that his purpose in life is to make a positive difference for others. He does more than to talk about it. He has a vision; he has a plan, based on being thankful and giving back and he lives it.

A Grand Rapids native, after being away for 16 years, he returned to the city to accept his current position as Senior Vice President, Human Resources for the Spectrum Health Hospital Group.

Mr. Barbee is thankful for the encouragement and support he received from family, teachers, counselors, mentors and role models on his journey to his current position.

He remembers and honors them by inspiring young people in the manner in which he was inspired.

"I received scholarships from organizations, such as The Grand Rapids Urban League, Ta - Wa- Si, The Negro Business and Professional Women's Club. I also appreciate organizations and the people that made me aware of the opportunities," he said. He continued, "I have reimbursed the organizations that supported me."

In the meantime, Ovell also gives back by assisting students with books and supplies. "I have selected students from the Grand Rapids area who, to me, have a compelling story; and I have agreed to cover the cost of their books and supplies for four years of college."

He continued, "I call them my Barbee Club members with the tag line 'You have been booked.' "

He also encourages them to give back.

"I tell each one of them to remember my investment in them and to invest in someone else in the future, when they are able."

In addition, he offers these pointers to young people:

• Continue your education.

• Don't allow others to label you.

• Use your voice as a catalyst for change.

• Don't let others write your story.

• Become the author of your own life story; it will be a best seller.

• Always set high expectations and goals for yourself.

Mr. Barbee had high expectations for himself as an honors student from elementary school through high school and college. He graduated from Creston High School where he was Class President. He earned a BA and an MA at the University of Michigan and a Master of Social Work Degree at Michigan State University. He largely credits the influence of his family on his accomplishments.

"A lot of my relatives are educated. My mother, Elaine Barbee reared four children as a divorcee, and worked for the school system. All four children earned a bachelor's degree and two earned their master's."

Above all, Ovell Barbee has been his own inspiration. Since his childhood, he has stayed focused on his vision of what he wanted to become. "I was focused on obtaining my education because I could see how education was helping other people."

"I believe in God. He knows the potential He has set for us. We are just turning pages." He continued, "I had a vision of what I wanted to be. At twelve, I wanted to be independent, and I thought could make choices. I believe people with a vision, a positive work ethic, and integrity can reach their potential as they pursue their passion. Even, if they are distracted, it is easier for them to get back on track."

He went on to say, "I had bumps along the way and I viewed them as learning experiences. Each prepared me for my position that I have today."

In the meantime, Ovell Barbie knows how to have fun.

He is an avid runner who has completed two marathon runs in ten K and five K. An avid foodie, he says, "I do not miss an opportunity to enjoy a good meal".
