Grand Rapids Police Chief Is Retiring

News came Wednesday that Grand Rapids Police Chief David Rahinsky is resigning and beginning retirement by moving closer to his family. He has spent four years in the position of Police Chief Of The City Of Grand Rapids and has a more than 30 - year tenure in his law enforcement career.

City Manager Mark Washington issued a press release announcing that Chief Rahinsky has submitted a letter of resignation. Washington thanked him for working closely with community stakeholders, police personnel, City leadership and the City Commission, to make the police department a model for other law enforcement agencies across the country.

"Under his leadership, our police department became an early adopter of body worn cameras and earned its first-ever CALEA accreditation. He also oversaw the implementation of a bias-free policing policy, youth interaction policy and officer training for both policies," Washington stated.

The Chief plans to take time off during and after the holiday period until his last date of employment to spend time with his family. His last day in office will be December 18, 2018.

City Manager Mark Washington plans to work with a national search firm to help find a new police chief.

"I want to make sure we get the type of leader who can keep our community safe, lead our officers and continue the important work of strengthening community - police relations," stated Washington. "I hope to share in a couple of weeks the search plan, which will include engagement with residents, police officers, the business community and other city stakeholders."

Washington also stated that he would be announcing the interim departmental leadership in the coming days.
